E-Activism
For those interested in the rights of immigrant workers in the United States, here’s an online action being circulated by two groups active in the field – the National Day Laborer Organizing Network (NDLON), and United Students Against Sweatshops (USAS). NDLON and USAS are part of a coalition advocating the end of the 287g program, a type of interior enforcement that some of our collleagues are studying this year. 287g agreements, which delegate some federal immigration authority to local enforcement personnel, have come under fire from advocates who view them as justifications for racial profiling that unfairly target immigrants with no criminal background. Here’s an AP article about the recent congressional hearing on 287g, and two reports on the impact of 287g nationally and in the state of North Carolina.

Whither interior enforcement?
From the Chicago Tribune:
This week, President Barack Obama told the Congressional Hispanic Caucus that he hopes to sign legislation before the end of the year and plans to introduce a new strategy for “comprehensive Immigration reform” during the next few weeks, those in attendance said.
But in a nod to the issue’s persistent volatility, the president stopped short of saying he would order a moratorium on enforcement measures that have separated thousands of families in recent years, U.S. Rep. Luis Gutierrez (D-Ill.) said during a news conference Friday.

Detention
An article on the costs and legal standards of immigrant detention. Note the usual “sending a message” rationale expressed by the spokesman for the Federation for American Immigration Reform.
